BREATH

Breath and breathing are fundamental to life. Our breath is sacred. There are no two beings who breathe alike. The quality of breath is a primary indicator of the quality of life. Without adequate breath, there is no health. The flow of the individual’s breath is, therefore, paramount in issues of health – especially mental and emotional health. Over time, we learn bad habits such as holding our breath, breathing shallowly, or hyperventilating. Shallow breathing is one of the most fundamental and instinctive behavioral reactions to emotion. Anxiety, fear, anger, shame and sadness are all manifested in the rate, depth and facility of breathing. The depth of breath is generally an accurate barometer of tension. In order to breathe deeply, you must be relaxed.

Healthy breathing requires complete inhalation and exhalation with smooth transitions between the two. Where there is deep ebb and flow of breath, with no holding of breath, there is relaxation and awareness in the body. Your breathing directly reflects the level of tension you carry in your body. When you are under tension, your breathing usually becomes shallow and rapid. When you are relaxed, you breathe more fully, more deeply, and from the bottom of your lungs.

Fresh air and proper breathing are essential to overall health and vitality. Breathing, for the most beneficial effects, should be done through the nostrils because this is healthier and more vitalizing to our entire energy system. Breathing through the mouth makes an individual more receptive to illness. While you are breathing, you are not only birthing oxygen, hydrogen and other gases in form of air, you are breathing vitality, prana, the energy of oneness, the essence of all. The air is only gas, the prana is the essence.

Who is breathing? Love is in the breath. Life is in the breath. The Divine is in the breath. When you are breathing, oneness is breathing. The whole is created out of one breath. The one breath is beyond normal breathing, it is in the interval between breathing in and breathing out. The whole existence was created out of one breathe. When you exhale air – explosion. When you inhale air – implosion. In the middle – nothingness, just the one breathe of the Infinite Consciousness. One breath is encoded in your DNA as the eternal truth; the perfect union with oneness.

Be aware of your breath. You don’t have to change your way of breathing, just be aware of it. Breathe naturally as you always do. Breathe in and out, in and out. Be fully aware. Be aware of the gap – of the interval between the breath.

The incoming breath and the outgoing breath – the gap – the centre of your Being;
The outgoing breath and the incoming breath – the gap – the centre of the Universe.

In and out. You will start to lose meaning, and become aware of the one centre. With each breath, you invite oxygen into every cell of your being. You invite full awareness. You invite Light. Oxygen enters cell by cell, until your entire being is a big bonfire of awareness. The Whole breathes with you, and you breathe with the Whole.

As sentient beings, we are supposedly limited to awareness perceived through/by the senses. Yet, MSI (in Enlightenment: the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali, 1995, by MSI) “[w]hen the mind becomes quiet, consciousnessness naturally experiences union with its fundamental reality, the True Form of the Self, Ascendant Consciousness” and “…any words impose limits, and consciousness without moving thought is unlimited” (p. 16). “When one Ascends the Waking State, thought stills and the conscious Experiencer, the Seer, is left without thought, experiencing consciousness without any movement of consciousness” (p. 17). If we TRULY experience ascention, we will remember it? Can we think about no thought? If we think about it, then we are out of it. Is an enlightened being one who constantly carries the memory of ascention and lives/acts/thinks “through” that memory?

I experienced an event a couple of years ago in which I felt very, very strong sensations moving through my body from chakra 1 to 6 (at least it went around inside my head, expanding and contracting it). (Actually, I felt like a huge amoeba was systematically moving through my whole body.) I tried to just notice it, but even by simply noticing I was still perceiving in a sentient manner! It was very hard not to try and explain it it to myself or understand it. I had been “told” by the teacher who spells words to me to just lie very, very still and to relax and to take it easy the next day.

I don’t believe that I experienced ascention into unity; rather, it was a preparation or physiological transformation in advance of such an experience. This is what I understand: I am being prepared for something; I am VERY, VERY, LOVED by some consciousness beyond my complete comprehension; and my intention and ideal, body and mind, are to be a willing partner in the preparation for the experience of enlightenment/unity.

Chuckle, this is the kind of stuff that comes out of my brain when it is triggered by something as innocent as reading today’s vocabulary word from Dictionary.Com: sentient!
